Frugal Friday: Cutting Costs for the College Bound
Do you have a child heading off to college this year? As parents who’ve been through this exercise (including me) well know, shopping for college can be like back to school shopping on steroids. That’s why I was so happy to see DealNews’ list of things you can skip buying entirely:
- Printer: In this digital age, the days of turning in a paper – an actual piece of paper – are few and far between. Most professors prefer assignments be turned electronically. Plus, for any student who needs a printer in a pinch, most schools have computer labs and libraries with printing stations that are either free or cheap.
- Expensive bedding: For many students, college is the first and only time they’ll need twin XL bedding for their bed – which will also double as a dining table and desk. Therefore, don’t splurge on anything that’s trendy or expensive. Personally, we went with a very reasonable Bed, Bath and Beyond in-a-bag set.
- HDTV (or any TV): Unless you have a news (or broadcast TV) junkie, your kid won’t miss the TV with Netflix and Hulu on his or her laptop. Most colleges have TVs located in the common rooms or recreation centers too.
While most people will be able to cut the above off their shopping list, there are certain things every college-bound kid needs. Here’s a look at some of the essentials, with deals to help you buy them without breaking the bank:
Closet organization: Now on at The Container Store is the “Happy Organized Home Sale.” There, you’ll find discounts on everything from hangers to shoe racks.
Dishware: When it comes to dishware, don’t invest in anything too expensive. Now at IKEA, select plates and bowls are at just 79 cents each.
Laundry necessities: For trips back and forth from the laundry room, a basket or bag is essential. Save 20% on “Room Essentials” items—including laundry necessities—when you use this coupon at Target.
