Frugal Friday: Best June Buys
This week marked the start of a fresh month and, in many ways, the start of summer. To celebrate, we thought we’d bring you a round-up of the best things to buy in June — as well as a few purchases you should skip and revisit later this year. Here’s what to put on your shopping list:
- Gadgets. Electronic ones that is. Blame it on Father’s Day, but everything from tablets to digital cameras to laptops will be on sale this month, says James Brown, VP of Sales for PriceGrabber. And not just last year’s models, either: New lines were launched several months ago at the Consumer Electronics Show, and this is the first wave of discounts.
- Smartphones. Yes, they’re gadgets — but we’re putting them in a separate category because these deals are primarily driven by graduation. Parents are equipping their kids with high-tech phones before they send them off to college. Note: Other college-driven items, like furniture to outfit your dorm room, hasn’t hit rock bottom yet, says Brown. Wait until after the Fourth of July.
- Kitchen items. Wedding season is in full swing, and retailers are lightening the burden by making popular registry items a bit cheaper. That means ou’ll find deals on things like knife sets and small kitchen appliances.
- Power tools. Again, this goes back to dad — they’re a popular Father’s Day gift, so popular that Brown predicts we could see savings of up to 25%. Along the same lines, other home repair products like paint is likely to be discounted this month as well. “Retailers know that more people do small home improvement projects in the summer,” explains Brown.
- Apparel. Namely, semi-annual sales, the most popular of which seems to be from Victoria’s Secret. It’s already happening online and will hit stores June 11 — saving you up to 40%.
- Finally, something to skip — lawn mowers and grills. These are very specific to this time of year, and retailers know you need them sooner rather than later, so they’re less likely to cut prices. Brown says if you can hold out until August or September, you’ll see better prices in this area. One caveat: The rules don’t apply to barbeque utensils and tools, which may be on sale right now. Why? “Retailers put these a low price points to try to incentivize you get the grill, too.”
